Textbook Donation vs. Selling — Which Is Actually Better?
The quick decision tree
| Situation | Better option |
|---|---|
| Current edition, last 1–2 years | Sell — check BookScouter or Chegg first |
| 2–3 years old, still current edition | Sell if you have time; donate if not |
| 3–5 years old | Try selling once (10 minutes); if no offers, donate |
| Over 5 years old or superseded edition | Donate — resale value is near zero |
| Full box of mixed textbooks | Donate — the sorting time isn't worth it |
What textbooks actually sell for
Buyback prices for textbooks drop faster than almost any other book category. Here's roughly what we see:
- Current edition, popular course textbook — $20–80 buyback
- 2-year-old edition — $5–25 buyback
- 4-year-old edition — $1–10 buyback, if anything
- 6+ year-old edition — usually zero — publishers push new editions to kill the used market
The hidden cost of selling
Selling textbooks isn't free-money-in-the-mail. Add these up honestly:
- Time checking prices across BookScouter, Chegg, Amazon, and eBay (15–30 min per book)
- Time packaging and shipping (10–15 min per shipment)
- Shipping cost if not covered by buyer
- Risk of buyer rejection ("your book has more wear than described")
- Weeks of waiting for payment
For a $20 buyback offer on one book, that's roughly $10-15 net after time and hassle. If you have 30 textbooks, the math changes — but so does the time cost.
When donation wins
Donation wins whenever any of these are true:
- Your books are 3+ years old
- You have a large mixed pile and don't want to sort
- You're clearing an estate or moving on a deadline
- You value the hour of your time more than $10–30 in low-probability offers
The best of both worlds
Here's what most Murrieta/Temecula/Menifee residents actually do:
- Pull the 3–5 textbooks that look newest.
- Check BookScouter (30 seconds each) — if any offer over $20, sell those.
- Donate the rest with free pickup — schedule at lastmilebooks.com.
Total time: 15 minutes. Highest possible return on your effort.
What Last Mile Books does with donated textbooks
We sort every textbook by hand, just like every other book. Recent editions in good condition get prepared for resale (which funds our free pickup service). Older editions that still have use go to educational programs, community libraries, or Little Free Libraries. Books that can't be reused are recycled responsibly.
