Are you a nonprofit?
We do not claim nonprofit or for-profit status. What matters is that the service is free to you and every book gets the best possible next chapter.
Cost and scheduling
How much does book donation pickup cost?
Book donation pickup is completely free. No fees, no fuel charges, no minimums beyond a single box of books.
How do I schedule a pickup?
Fill out the pickup form at lastmilebooks.com. Give us your name, address, an estimate of how many boxes, and a date that works. We respond within one business day with a confirmed window.
How fast can you come?
Most Temecula and Murrieta pickups happen within 2 to 4 days. Menifee, Wildomar, Lake Elsinore usually within 3 to 5 days. Palm Springs is scheduled on route days, typically within 5 to 10 days.
What if I need a same-day pickup?
Same-day is sometimes possible in Temecula and Murrieta if we already have a run scheduled. Email us and we'll tell you honestly whether we can fit you in.
Do I need to be home for pickup?
No. If you leave the boxes on your porch, driveway, or in an unlocked garage, we can complete a contact-free pickup. We text a confirmation photo when the pickup is complete.
What we accept
What kinds of books do you accept?
Hardcovers, paperbacks, fiction, nonfiction, cookbooks, textbooks (last five years preferred), children's books, young adult books, religious and inspirational, art books, coffee-table books, classics, and estate libraries. Basically any book in usable condition.
What can't you take?
We can't take moldy, water-damaged, or musty books, books with major rips or missing covers, encyclopedia sets (too heavy to move for their limited resale value), magazines, newspapers, catalogs, or non-book media like VHS and cassettes.
Do you take textbooks?
Yes. Recent textbooks (last five years) are ideal because they still have resale value. We'll take older textbooks too, they just have a lower chance of finding a new reader.
Do you take children's books?
Absolutely. Children's books are some of the most-requested items when we pass books along to new readers. Bring them on.
Do you take cookbooks?
Yes, cookbooks are welcome — new and vintage.
Do you take Bibles or religious books?
Yes. We accept religious and inspirational books of all traditions.
How many books is too many?
There is no upper limit. We regularly handle full estate libraries with hundreds or thousands of books. Just tell us roughly how many boxes when you schedule.
How few books is too few?
The minimum is one box. If you have less than a full box, that's fine — put them in a bag or any container.
What happens after pickup
What happens to the books after you pick them up?
Every book is sorted by hand. Books that can be resold or passed along to a new reader are prepared for that. Books that cannot be reused are recycled responsibly.
Can I get a receipt?
Yes. We provide a written pickup confirmation with the date, your address, and an estimated number of boxes for your records.
Do you sell the books?
Some books we sell to fund the free pickup service, some we donate or pass along, and some we recycle responsibly. What matters to us is every book gets a real shot at a new reader.
Estate libraries and special situations
Can you handle an estate library?
Yes. We regularly handle estate cleanouts across Riverside County. There is no upper limit on the number of books. See our estate library cleanout page for details.
I'm the executor — can you help?
Yes. We work with executors and estate professionals regularly. We coordinate over phone and email, provide written pickup confirmation, and can pick up on any schedule that works for the estate.
Do you work with estate sale companies?
Yes. If you're an estate sale company with unsold books after a sale, we'll come take them off your hands. Email us to set up a recurring arrangement.
I'm out of state — can I schedule for a family property in Riverside County?
Yes. We regularly work with out-of-state family. We coordinate over phone and email and can complete pickups when nobody is home if a neighbor, realtor, or property manager grants access.
How we compare
How is Last Mile Books different from Goodwill or Salvation Army?
Goodwill and Salvation Army are large national chains that don't specialize in books. We are a small local team that only handles books, so we can spend more time sorting each donation and finding the best next reader for each book.
Should I sell my books instead of donating?
If you have a small number of high-value books (first editions, signed copies, rare or academic titles), selling directly usually earns more. For most household libraries, the time and hassle of selling isn't worth it — a free pickup takes 15 minutes and the books get a new life.
